How Rollout Works: Australia's Peer-to-Peer Civil Construction Equipment Hire Marketplace
Rollout is Australia's peer-to-peer civil construction equipment hire marketplace. We connect hirers — civil contractors, earthmovers, farmers, project managers and owner-operators — directly with local machine owners who have equipment sitting idle between jobs.
The concept is simple: instead of calling a hire depot and paying inflated rates, you hire directly from someone nearby who owns the machine you need. Everyone wins — you pay less, they earn more from equipment that would otherwise be sitting unused.
What is peer-to-peer equipment hire?
Traditional equipment hire works through a depot. The depot buys machines, maintains a fleet, and charges enough to cover those costs plus profit. You end up paying for their overhead.
Peer-to-peer hire cuts the middleman out. The machine owner lists their equipment directly on Rollout, sets their own rate, and you hire it directly from them. Rollout handles the booking, the payment, and the trust layer between both parties — but the transaction is fundamentally between you and the owner.
The result is typically lower hire rates for hirers and real income for owners on machinery they already own.
What equipment can I hire on Rollout?
Rollout is focused exclusively on civil construction and earthmoving equipment. You'll find:
- Excavators — mini, mid-size and large
- Posi tracks (compact track loaders / rubber track skid steers)
- Motor graders
- Rollers and compactors — smooth drum, padfoot, multi-tyred
- Trucks — tipper trucks, water carts
- Dump trucks — articulated and rigid
- Dozers — from D4-size up to D10-class
- Wheel loaders
- Tractors
- Attachments — buckets, rippers, tiltrotators, mulchers, compaction wheels and more
All listings on Rollout are for dry hire only — the machine, no operator. If you need an operator, Rollout is not the right platform.
How to hire equipment on Rollout
1. Search for what you need
Use the search on the homepage or browse /listings. Filter by machine type, location, and availability dates. Listings show daily and weekly rates, machine specifications, and photos.
2. Check availability and send a request
When you find a machine that suits your job, select your hire dates and submit a booking request. The owner is notified immediately and has 24 hours to accept or decline.
3. Payment is held securely
Once the owner accepts, payment is processed securely through Stripe. Your payment is held and only released to the owner after the hire starts — giving you protection if something falls through before pickup.
4. Collect the machine and get to work
Arrange collection directly with the owner, or use Rollout's float transport network to have the machine delivered to site. The owner's listing will specify whether float transport is available or whether you need to arrange your own.
5. Return and review
Return the machine at the end of your hire period in the same condition you received it. Both you and the owner can leave a review — helping build trust across the platform for everyone.
What about float transport?
Many machines on Rollout are too heavy or too wide to drive on public roads. Float transport — a truck and trailer rated to carry your machine — is required.
Rollout has a network of approved float transport partners. When you submit a hire request, you can request float transport at the same time. We'll provide a quote based on the machine size and distance. See our guide to arranging float transport for full details.
Is Rollout just for professionals?
Rollout is open to anyone who needs to hire civil construction equipment. That said, dry hire means you need to be competent to safely operate the machine. For excavators and other heavy plant, you should hold the relevant high-risk work licence (HRWL) or be able to demonstrate competency.
Owners have the right to ask about your experience and qualifications before accepting a booking.
How are payments and disputes handled?
All payments flow through Stripe, a world-class payment processor used by millions of businesses globally. Your card details are never stored by Rollout — they're handled entirely by Stripe's secure infrastructure.
In the event of a dispute — damage, a machine not matching its listing description, or a cancellation — Rollout's support team is available to assist. See our full terms and conditions for how disputes are handled.
How much does it cost?
Hirers pay a small service fee on top of the owner's listed rate. This covers the cost of running the platform, payment processing, and customer support. The total price including the service fee is always shown clearly before you confirm a booking — there are no surprises at checkout.
Owners are charged a platform commission on each completed booking, deducted automatically before their payout is released.
FAQ
What is dry hire? Dry hire means you hire the machine only — no operator included. You or your team operates the equipment. This is the most common hire type for civil construction professionals who are already licensed and competent to operate.
Is Rollout available across all of Australia? Yes. Rollout operates Australia-wide. We have machine owners listing equipment in all states and territories.
Do I need an account to browse listings? You can browse listings without an account. You'll need to create a free account to send a hire request or message an owner.
What if the machine breaks down during my hire? Owners are responsible for ensuring their equipment is in safe working condition. If a breakdown occurs, contact the owner immediately and reach out to Rollout support.
